Bee Keeping...

Yesterday, Owen and I went to the library for a Bee Keeping program! It was really interesting. Our speaker showed the smoker that she used to calm the bees, and had some cool things on the tables like actual honey comb, a bee/wasp in a magnifying box to see the differences, color pages of bees, honey to taste (though she got it out after we left and I forgot), pictures of what goes on in the hive, etc. The kids got to make a free bee's wax candle, and look at the bees in the case. They were really excited about that. One bee actually got out, but it was caught. Yikes! Oh, and she had the children pretend to be the different bees. Owen was a drone. Only three of those. LOL. Well, they get to mate all their life, and then they die. (I wonder how long a life that is.)

Janet, you certainly know how to dig up all the free stuff for kids to do around your place. How do you find all these opportunities?

The Librarians LOVE Owen, what can I say? LOL. They come out of the woodwork, just to say "Hi" to him, hug him, and talk directly to him. Actually, they have a calendar with all the local library events on them. Laptime, book signings, adult programs like evening knitting or quit making, Scrapbooking, etc. Frequently, the same things end up traveling from branch to branch. Later this summer, we're going to something called "Bubbleology." I can't wait to go to that one. LOL.
They also have a reading program for preschoolers and readers thought the summer. When he gets 25 stickers for each day of reading (either by him or to him), he gets his name put into a drawing for special prizes. Even if he doesn't get something, I'm going to get him something. His favorite book to read thus far is "Green Eggs and Ham," by Dr. Seuss.
